About Us
Hi, I’m Israel.
I’ve always been a builder at heart, it just took me a little while to figure it out. Growing up, you’d have been more likely to find me in the woodwork room or tinkering in my dad’s garage than anywhere else. There was always something being made, fixed, or taken apart to see how it worked.
But after an apprenticeship on the tools, I took a bit of a detour and headed to EIT to study Sport Science, thinking becoming a teacher would be a sensible career eventually. It was a good chapter, but pretty soon I realised it wasn’t for me.
A well-timed word from my girlfriend’s dad was all the nudge I needed to get back to what I loved. Back on the tools I hustled hard for that first job, and IJM Construction was born.
From COVID lockdowns to Cyclone Gabrielle,we’ve navigated it all over the last ten years, and kept on growing. Along the way I even found time to settle down with my wife and two kids, and build a home of our own. Today I lead a close-knit team of six builders, supported by a Project Manager who keeps everything on track and on time. And last year I made one of my smartest decisions yet, bringing in Mel as Operations Manager. She’s the person who holds it all together behind the scenes and makes sure the experience for our clients is as smooth as the finished product.
At IJM Construction the most important thing has always been the work itself. Every client deserves a home they’re proud of. Delivering that is what gets us out of bed in the morning, and we’d love to help bring your dream home to life too.

I grew up making things, spent my twenties learning the trade, and have spent the last decade building a company I’m genuinely proud of. Outside of work I’m a husband and dad to two kids who keep me very much grounded. I know what good quality looks like, I care about the details, and I want every client we work with to feel like the best decision they made was calling us.

If you want something done perfectly, give it to Mike. His attention to detail is genuinely something to watch. On a recent renovation he sourced original 100-year-old rimu and hand-crafted skirting boards and door surrounds to match the originals. Not a millimetre out. Outside of work, he shapes rare stones and pounamu into jewellery by hand, that is when his 18 month old isn’t keeping him busy.

Every team needs someone who can move a solid concrete outdoor table out of the way before breakfast and still have energy for a run up the peak after work. That’s David. Quietly capable, and, despite the strength, genuinely meticulous when it comes to getting
the details right. He has four kids, which perhaps explains both the physical fitness and the unshakeable calm under pressure.
